Professor Halabala was born in 1903 in Koryčany, a city which is located in Moravia in the Czech Republic. He graduated from art school in Prague and in 1928 started in the famous furniture factory UP Závody as the head of the Prague shop. Later on he became the chief architect of the UP Závody, a venture that was considered one of the most successful in Europe.
The company ranked at the time among the largest and most progressive furniture factories in Czechoslovakia and the products bearing the UP trademark became a synonym for quality and good taste.
He contributed to the development of the products and to the advertising and sales strategies. Furniture of UP Závody, mainly the production of Jindřich Halabala is pushed through the optimum combination of superior design, functionality and efficiency. He became a leading inspiration followed by many other manufacturers throughout Europe. His views on housing and furniture quality, which should be elegant in terms of shape, perfectly rendered, highly functional, storable and variable while at the same time accessible to the widest possible layer of the population, have remained inspirational and a timeless legacy.
