A pair of armchairs designed by the legendary Italian designers Afra & Tobia Scarpa in 1975, from the Basilian collection, branded B&B, with a frame made of Indian rattan, a leather base and a recognisable South East Asian print upholstery fabric that reflect the style of Tobia Scarpa and her wife Afra Scarpa’s design style. The original fabric of the piece is signed by G. Dall'Alba.
The designer Tobia Scarpa was born in Venice in 1935 to Carlo Scarpa, a world-renowned architect. From 1960 onwards, he and his wife Afra Bianchin Scarpa opened their own design studio. Their work included architecture and everyday objects such as furniture and clothing and created many new designs in the field of industrial design. In 1970, Tobia Scarpa was awarded the Golden Compass Award and in 2008 the Golden Compass Award for Lifetime Achievement.
The Scarpa's are a golden couple in the design world, with a particular focus on technology and aesthetics. Their designs are refined in line, elegant in form and highly recognisable. Together they have been designing for over 50 years, collaborating with design and fashion houses to create iconic pieces that represent Italian design excellence. For Afra and Tobia Scarpa, design is an idea, a will, a way of performing, turning a lamp into a sculpture. They are among the designers who have created history, with a strong cultural heritage behind each design.
