The “Bench for Two” is a historic and iconic piece by Danish designer Nanna Ditzel for Fredericia Stolefabrik . The “Bench for Two” is a historic and iconic piece by Danish designer Nanna Ditzel for Fredericia Stolefabrik . This innovative two-seater bench and table was Nanna Ditzel and Fredericia Furniture’s first joint project in 1989. In 1990, it won the Gold Medal in the International Furniture Design Competition held in Japan. The bench's sculptural back and tabletop are made of 1.5 mm ultra-thin aircraft plywood, which is a lightweight, flexible and very strong material. Maple plywood was used for the seat and table frame. The two back legs of the bench are slightly tilted, while the front ones form a unit with the accompanying table’s legs. The unique geometric pattern on the seat backs and table tops is screen printed and the entire piece is finished in a lacquer finish.
The unique materials and coloring make this piece of furniture a work of art in any space. Nanna Ditzel’s experimental nature and Fredericia’s high-quality manufacturing is very visible in this piece, a unification of the sculptural with the functional.
Nanna Ditzel was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1923. She trained as a cabinetmaker before going on to study at the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. She was always inspired by the challenges of new materials and techniques, and in the 50's she experimented with split-level floor seating. Nanna was a pioneer in the fields of fiberglass, wickerwork and foam rubber, and in various disciplines such as cabinet making, jewellery, tableware, and textiles. As one of most renowned Danish designers, she was awarded numerous prizes including: in 1990, the Gold Medal in the International Furniture Design Competition, Japan, for “Bench for Two”, the ID-prize 1995 for “Trinidad”, which is Denmark’s highest design honour. She was Elected Honourable Royal Designer at Royal Society of Arts in London in 1996 and awarded the lifelong Artists' Grant by the Danish Ministry of Culture in 1998.
