Bernard Rancillac was a French painter, sculptor and exponent of the New Figurative Art, and in 1966 he designed a...
Bernard Rancillac was a French painter, sculptor and exponent of the New Figurative Art, and in 1966 he designed a piece of furniture called the "Elephant Recliner". The only piece of furniture designed by Bernard Rancillac, it was presented in Paris in 1968 at the exhibition Les assies du siège contemporain.
The legs of the Elephant Recliner are made of black lacquered metal, and the seat and backrest are made of polyester resin and fibreglass. The red, yellow, grey and white elephant recliner is highly sought after by art collectors.
In 1985, Michel Roudillon (manufacturer/brand) remodelled the elephant recliner and produced a limited edition of 100 pieces worldwide under the name of Ronsillac. Today, the value of this chaise longue is widely recognised and it is particularly successful in the auction market.
