We are delighted to announce that after nearly a year-long preparation, CoBrA GALLERY’s first exhibition“AVANT-GARDE RENAISSANCE” will officially open on September 18th, 2021. The exhibition will be open to public from September 19th to October 18th, 2021.
CoBrA GALLERY is located in a splendid historical building — the Somekh Building. The building is situated in the Shanghai Bund Historical and Cultural Scenery District, west of the Huangpu River and south of the Suzhou River. It was designed by Atkinson&Dallas Architects and Civil Engineers Ltd and Comprador Ying Ziyun for the French merchant Sassoon Solomon Somekh a century ago, and it stands as one of the most significant early works by the company in modern day’s Bund area.
The Somekh Building is representative of the eclectic architectural style with a classic and elegant interior design. This historical building is brought back to life after 7 years of restoration and is now ready to welcome the public with its fresh look. Last year marks the building’s 100th birthday, and CoBrA GALLERY was honored to be invited to open a space here. Such an arrangement not only holds great commemorative meaning but also signifies an integration of the classic and the new.
During the past century, modern designs that represent Art Deco, Modernism and Post-Modernism have been regarded as avant-garde.Though they have become the past in the modern context, they still remind us of our pursuit for the cutting edge. As new technologies and media become available, contemporary art starts to challenge the boundaries of classical art with numerous new art genres and forms. If we look back from the future, today’s contemporary art will one day become classic as well.
